Meet the Publisher

In 2002 Earl Jones founded The Greensboro Times. The first edition of The Greensboro Times was published on April 4, 2002, to celebrate the life and legacy of Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A dedication ceremony was held at the African American owned restaurant, Alexander Deveraux. One hundred and sixty-six people attended including the Mayor of Greensboro, other elected officials, and African American clergy. The Greensboro Times begin in part, to counter the false and negative portrayal of African Americans and African America leadership. The newspaper informs and educate African Americans to formulate strategies and solutions for racial and economic justice.

 

Earl Jones is a native of Burlington North Carolina, a 1971 graduate of North Carolina Central University, Durham, N.C. and a 1976 graduate of Texas Southern University School of Law, Houston, Texas. Jones worked as Associate Attorney for Central Carolina Legal Services (Legal Aid Foundation) from 1976 -1983. Jones founded Lawyers in Exile in 1979. He founded Guilford County’s anti-poverty program in 1984 and served as its Executive Director for 16 years. He served as Legal Counsel for the Greensboro Chapter of the NAACP from 1979-1985 and filed successful legal challenges against the City of Greensboro (1981) and Guilford County (1985) under the 1965 Voting Rights Act to ensure that African Americans would have the opportunity to elect people of their choice to the Greensboro City Council and Guilford County Board ofCommissioners.

 

Earl Jones served as an elected official for 26 years. He was the longest serving member of the Greensboro City Council, serving for 18 years. From 2002-2010, Jones served as a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives. He was Chairman of the Guilford County Legislative Delegation 2006-2010.

Recipient of the Triad Minority & Women Business Expo Lifetime Achievement Award.

 

Presented the National Institute of Minority Economic Development, 2023 Diverse Business Champion Award.

 

Received the National Alliance for Black Business’s 2024 National Business League of the Year Award.
